What Is A Wart?

A common skin condition, warts are most often found on the hands, fingers, and around the fingernails. Warts generally look like little, fleshy peas, but they may differ in size. It is also normal for warts to appear in clusters on the knees and elbows. Warts are brought on by the human papilloma virus (HPV). They can be brought about from making direct contact with HPV. It can be spread from direct person-to-person contact or from making contact with an object used by a person with HPV, such as gym equipment, a towel, or the tile surrounding a pool. Though warts are usually harmless, they may be annoying and unattractive. Store-bought wart removal products aren't usually enough to treat warts so dermatologist Dr. Austin Mitchell provides wart removal at his office in Nashville, TN. If you or your child have a wart you'd like removed, schedule a consultation with Dr. Mitchell at Brentwood Skin Clinic.

How Are Warts Removed?

There are a few different ways we can treat warts. However, even after your first treatment, warts can reoccur so it's crucial to get the right treatment to minimize outbreaks. Freezing a wart is a normal treatment and can be done with success. With this technique, Dr. Mitchell applies liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart away. A blister will develop around the wart, and the frozen cells will fall off in a week. Another treatment is applying cantharidin, a substance that can cause redness of the skin once applied to a wart. The cantharidin is applied to the skin to form a blister around the wart, and it is a typical and popular treatment because the technique causes little to no discomfort. Burning (electrosurgery) or cryotherapy (freezing) can also be used, as well as curetting (scraping) or excising (cutting) the wart(s). Laser treatments, chemical peels, immunotherapy, or bleomycin injections may also be treatment options when the wart(s) is difficult to treat.

They are always customer service oriented and do a great job for their patients. Dr Mitchell is knowledge and friendly.
