What is IPL treatment?

Men and women who are concerned about the look of sun damage or dark spots on their skin can be good candidates for intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy at Brentwood Skin Clinic. An IPL photofacial is a rejuvenating treatment for hyperpigmentation problems on the neck, face and hands. Intense pulses of light are used to (get rid of brown and red spots) and boost collagen production. In time, you should see a healthier complexion, an improved tone, and fewer dark spots. Even though IPL is a noninvasive process, it can be very effective and can create amazing results for your complexion. Our team at Brentwood Skin Clinic employs Dye-VL with the Harmony XL PRO technology from Alma Lasers to carry out IPL skin treatments and can provide a skin analysis to see if this solution can help renew your skin.

What Are the Benefits of IPL?

An IPL treatment uses light to reduce the look of several skin conditions related to hyperpigmentation, including, but not limited to:

  • Age spots (also called liver or brown spots)
  • Sun spots
  • Acne scars
  • Rosacea
  • Spider veins and other visible blood vessels

IPL treatments using Harmony XL PRO technology generally take about 20 – 30 minutes per session. While many patients elect to treat damaged or discolored skin on or around the face, IPL therapy can be used on other parts of the body. In the time following treatments, individuals should see a healthier layer of skin with a more even tone and fewer spots of pigmentation.

Am I a good candidate for IPL treatment?

A photofacial reaches the deeper layers of your skin to improve many complexion problems (particularly brown lesions and sun spots) with minimal or no recovery time. Candidates for IPL at Brentwood Skin Clinic will have many problems with their skin, such as rosacea, sun damage, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, visible pores, redness, freckles, age and sun spots, or spider veins. Dr. Austin Mitchell will examine your complexion to determine if you will benefit from IPL during your initial consultation.

What to Expect After IPL Treatment

There is no recovery period associated with a photofacial treatment. You will leave our office with your skin a little swollen and pink. This will go away naturally in several hours — it can be concealed with cosmetics if you prefer. Brentwood Skin Clinic advises patients to apply a cream on the skin's surface to minimize irritation and accelerate healing. It may also help to take an anti-inflammatory medicine to help reduce swelling. Over the next several days, the blemishes under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake off. It's very important to protect your skin with sunscreen at all times after a photofacial and to not pick at your skin. While you should have some visible improvements after your first session, your skin will attain ideal results with multiple IPL treatments. Dr. Mitchell suggests most patients get 3 – 6 treatments performed about once a month at Brentwood Skin Clinic.

IPL Treatment FAQ

How much does IPL cost?
Your complexion issues are unique, which means your cost for a photofacial will depend on your personal concerns. Brentwood Skin Clinic periodically offers specials on treatments, like IPL therapy, and we take a range of payment methods. At your first visit, your skin consultant can help estimate your treatment pricing and recommend the number of appointments needed to maximize your results.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Some skin improvements can be noticed after each treatment with Harmony XL PRO IPL technology, but optimal results are most commonly noticeable about one month after a full series of treatments is completed. It’s normal to have varying results after each treatment session.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
Most women and men notice minor side effects, such as temporary redness, swelling, blisters, bruising, or crusting, which should naturally subside within a day or two after the procedure. You will be extra sensitive to the sun, and excessive sun exposure will negatively impact your results. You should also wear sunscreen to protect your skin and help prevent skin issues, such as redness.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
To prepare for IPL therapy, patients are asked to avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. You may be asked to discontinue the use of certain medications and topical creams, like Retin-A™, several days before each procedure, and we may recommend that you avoid taking ibuprofen, aspirin, or other blood thinners 5 – 7 days before your treatment to decrease your risk of developing bruises. You should also protect the treated areas with sunscreen since your skin will be extra sensitive.

Why should I get multiple IPL sessions?
Multiple IPL treatments with Harmony XL PRO are recommended to produce natural-looking enhancements in the quality of your skin. Each session helps to fade spots and other surface irregularities. A series of sessions also allow for longer-lasting aesthetic results.
